bbcnews | As many as 250,000 Ethiopians live in and around Washington DC, more
than in any urban area outside of the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa
itself.
There are so many restaurants, shops and businesses catering
to Ethiopians that the community has its own 1,000-page telephone book.
The country's civil war, which ultimately led to independence
for Eritrea, caused tens of thousands of Ethiopians to seek asylum in
the US during the 1990s. Many of those who came to America as Ethiopians
are now Eritrean.
The BBC's William Marquez visited an area of Washington known
to some as Little Ethiopia to hear how this community is both
protecting its African heritage and embracing modern America.
