world refugees top 50 million in 2013 - worse than in WW-II

RT |  The number of people who fled their homes across the globe in 2013 is over 50 million for the first time since World War II, a new UN report says. Amnesty International blamed the UN for ineffective or delayed responses to ongoing conflicts.

In total, there were registered 51.2 million refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced people last year. On average, 32,200 people fled their homes each day, according to the report by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, titled “War’s Human Cost.”

"We are witnessing a quantum leap in forced displacement in the world," António Guterres, head of the UN's refugee agency, told The Guardian.

A total of 16.7 million people are refugees. Apart from 5 million Palestinians, Afghans, Syrians and Somalis are 50 percent, with the main host countries Pakistan, Iran, Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.
Then, about 1.2 million people sought asylum to mostly developed countries, and Germany was the largest recipient. Most of the asylum seekers were from Syria, Democratic Republic of Congo and Myanmar.

Finally, internally displaced people were a historic 33.3 million people – forced to flee their homes, but staying within their country’s borders.

Over 50 percent of the refugees are children, with many of them traveling alone and some falling into the hands of human traffickers – that’s according to the UNHCR annual global trends report, issued Friday.

More than 25,000 children asked for asylum in 77 countries last year, and according to the document, it’s just a small percentage of the number of displaced children around the world.

The main causes for the jump in figures are climate change, population growth, urbanization, food insecurity and water scarcity. In many cases, the causes are combined with each other.

It's Big D. I doubt he's had much experience with people that are different from himself. I bet he can't tell you anything outside of his bookshelf when it comes to people.

That Wiki was about death/wounded totals. The original post was about refugees.

Refugees occur when threatened folks don't stick around waiting to become casualties. Smart folks comprehend the situation/risks, and they make themselves scarce (become refugees) -- dumb folks get killed/captured (or grabbed and sold for slavery).

So you're saying the 777 islamic-terrorism-related fatalities worldwide in 2013 -- greater than lightning strikes but less than bee stings -- are a "primary" source of refugees. But the full-fledged wars going on in Iraq and Afganistan are not significant sources of refugees. Maybe because people in Iraq are not very smart.

Have I got that right?

I don't think we'll see BD on this thread again.

You introduced body count into the discussion. I only introduced the concept of "number." Which I suggest you look into.

I understand exactly what you're saying, BD. That's the problem. Each time I play your own story back to you, you get embarrassed and change your tune.

This time, you say that destroying entire cities -- as we did in Fallujah -- doesn't necessarily generate many refugees ... compared to killing a few dozen people in one country and a hundred in another. Because lack of a roof doesn't make people move into a tent city filled with rapists. What makes people move into a tent city filled with rapists is *publicity*.

For example look at the streams of refugees leaving greater NYC after the unprecedented publicity attending the 9/11 WTC attacks.

Brother CNu:

What good is it for you to publish the HEAD COUNT of refugees?

Be it 50 million or 1 million - BEYONCE'S Daughter's hairstyle is more important to the bulk of the people who would need to care about this situation.

This is the closest that I ever recall being in COMPLETE AGREEMENT with an article from "Counterpunch".

The one flaw is that he failed to move from "The US Foreign Policy" and then away from "The Media" and instead LOOK INTO THE CONGREGATION of AMERICANS.

The level of IGNORANCE attained by the American populous as they are unable to move beyond their domestic partisan entrenchment is astounding.

The Right-wing has a "Bomb Them First" strategy, allowing the terror of their superior fire power to function as a suppressor of factional aggression (and thus is seen as a "Moral Imperialist imposition)

The Left-wing, which is presently sedated because Obama is seen as the champion fighter for DOMESTIC PROGRESSIVE Fundamentalist Imperialism in America, is NEVER going to derail their domestic progressive agenda by standing up for greater global goals of justice and anti-imperialism.

"The Blacks" in America are latched onto the Progressive movement and thus are unwilling to see the continuity of American imperialism straight through the Obama administration. They merely now voice justifications - that make them sound just like the "White Americans' who in the past looked but stand silent when "People Of Color" were on the receiving end of the stick.

Yawn, yawn, yawn.

When one buys into a narrative, looks at the other co-conspirators who publish information about this same narrative and then allows this engineered image on their "Artificial Horizon" to be their primary navigation aid - THEY ARE PRONE TO ignore the real world hazards that exist immediately outside of their craft - because the ENGINEERS worked carefully to not expose the MONEY MEN that ADVANCE their agenda rather than Block it.

George Soros has his hands in so many Black organizations that have unchecked access into the Black Community's Consciousness Nucleus - that it strains credulity to invest the time wondering why they have the Koch Brothers (and Sheldon Adelson ) on trial - no different than the list that "Think Progress", "Center For American Progress" and "Media Matters" have published.

I require my children to be able to converse intelligently with me concerning current events and have and provide critical contextual understanding of the same. Much as I require them to be able to catch or kill, clean and cook - all kinds of small game - both land and aquatic. Bottomline, I require my children to have a clear-eyed understanding of the gravity of their situation. Everything else is merely conversation...,

lol, the only thing long-suffering inquiring minds want to know is who exactly has their hands in (oops, I mean on) you Feed, and do they realize how limited their return on investment has been after all these many years of your increasingly incoherent Jeremiad?
