Drone Swarms are Here: 1 Minute to Midnight?

global guerillas | The algorithms that enable drone swarms is advancing EXTREMELY quickly. In the next couple of years, the number of advances in technology, deployments, use cases, and awareness of drones will be intense. In 5 years, they will be part of every day life. You will see them everywhere.

Not just one or two drones. SWARMS of drones. Tens. Hundreds. Thousands. Millions (potentially if the cost per unit is small enough)?

How soon will we see that. It's already here.

If you want to learn more about how swarming works as a method of attack, here's an article I wrote about it seven years ago. Benefits of swarming attacks include:
  • It cuts the enemy target off from supply and communications.
  • It adversely impacts the morale of the target.
  • It makes a coordinated defense extremely difficult (resource allocation is intensely difficult).
  • It radically increases the potential of surprise

Here's your homework. Think about the swarming tech you see above in the context of the following:

These small drone thingies will be made illegal for private use.  Too much potential for terrorism and other sinister uses...

 ROTFLMBAO!!!!

Enforcment of that prohibition will be even more spectacularly unsuccessful than enforcement of laws prohibiting narcotics and hacking...,

dude, as usual, ten steps back and taking two steps backward.

The, ah, the shotgun resistance is going to be, ah, developed in phase II.

Big Don said...

Attach some explosive to one and you got a dandy mobile IED.  First time that happens in a high profile venue and they will ban all RC entities, even your kid's lil RC Monster Truck...

There won't be any "shotgun resistance" Tom.

While birdshot from a severely sawed-off twelve gauge may not penetrate advanced carbon fiber chassis or rotors, the force of impact is gonna be hellified on electronics and explosive payloads. I don't think there's any defending of swarmbots against this countermeasure http://www.amazing1.com/emp.htm

Shotgun resistance is futile.

Kel-Tec is due to begin producing it's own version of the TP-82 space gun. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TP-82

A pair of those bad boys on your hips could get you in a decidedly Buck and the Preacher vs. The Swarm frame of mind....,

Hey I may be a pencil-neck Yankee but I can appreciate some shooting.  Man.

CNu, I'm disappointed in you!  Who cares what works or doesn't work, the point is to have a Phase II!

my bad mang..., how could I go and forget the warsocialist profiteers?

Already begun work on this a few months ago. The problem I have with this video is how they are using nothing more than a "3-D Room" with an xyz coordinate that is driven through computers. While this is nice for simulating what already can be programmed using computer game physics, it ain't real world.

My goal is solving security in high crime community and the problem with quadrotors is the fear of them dropping out of the sky and losing them. I also purchased an R/C predator drone but this thing fly too fast for what I'm trying to do - remind me of a WWII spitfire making a inaccurate run all the time.

To be honest, what I'm learning to love is really the wheel-based autonomous drones that can drive themselves to gps coordinates. that would be a great swarm - imagine a swarm of turtle looking shell-based drones emerging out of nowhere that can "flash mob" to a gps-based location. I was at a robotics event and saw a bunch of snot-nosed punks tricked out Roomba carpet cleaners in this fashion.

However, this is not the scariest thing - the scariest thing is the Kiva bots because of the number of high-school level jobs it is destroying in this bad economy.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWsMdN7HMuA

The problem with personal HERF weapons is their large size and limited range. Clearly the warsocialists will have solutions but us poor saps are screwed.

Dale Asberry said...

I guarantee that the warsocialists have implemented flocking behaviour in software that works flawlessly in a real world environment. It was my responsibility to integrate said software into a network-centric C2 system.

Ed Dunn said...

I believe the economic warfare impact of those Kiva bots are more damaging because they can operate in peacetime. There is already another secret project on "farm bots" I'm aware of that is even more devastating in terms of harvesting food. This bot subject is growing faster than the media is willing to cover..

No worries about the long-term impact of those kiva bots. Farming and other low energy production activities are best tended by low energy humans. Those swarming bots OTOH are a nice low energy fulcrum point for tending to noncompliant humans.

Hmm. With a 10,000 year old force escalation protocol all ready to be implanted.
