the mcgurk effect

Video - The McGurk effect is a compelling demonstration of how we all use visual speech information. The effect shows that we can't help but integrate visual speech into what we 'hear'.

That is SO WEIRD!

If vision does that when it is SO OBVIOUS then what does it say about SEEING airliners destroy skyscrapers?

However, my telling you that you're sphexish over and over... does that make me sphexish? Lol.

Okay, well, I still heard "bab" even though I could see he was making an f sound.

Not entirely neurotypical perhaps.

How can that effect be created and tested without advanced technology?

It is like bodies are not evolved to cope with effects that can be created with technology  therefore it can be used to possibly drive us insane in ways that were not possible more than 100 years ago.  So what is the effect of children being exposed to this stuff from age 3?

Does anybody know?  Do we know how to create a techno-cyber-culture?  We are just stumbling into it.

Umbra,

I believe you would be absolutely shocked by the scope and depth of really very ancient psychological knowledge and technique. For example, it wasn't until the advent of digital video recording that  Paul Ekman was able to catalog the presence and practical application of facial microexpressions, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microexpression

If I'm not mistaken, the Noh mask is centuries old and a plastic art evidencing highly sophisticated understanding of facial expression and microexpression, long before the advent of digital video technology http://www.kasrl.org/noh-mask-effect.gif

So no, TPTB aren't actually stumbling into anything. TPTB have engaged in human livestock management for a very, very long time predicated upon a greater depth and breadth of psychological knowledge, expertise and intentional application.

Thinking about this a little further, isn't it only natural that among the social insects, for example, there are uber "individuals" that functionally govern the collective processes of the "intelligent" community?

Is a queen bee/ant/termite/wasp the haplo-diploidy equivalent of a "God" or god-function?

Umbrarchist,

Good point.  Makes me think of how poorly deer are at coping with motor vehicles.
