dailycaller | A federal appeals court issued a temporary stay on a judge’s
injunction barring federal officials from communicating with social
media companies for the purposes of censoring protected speech on
Friday.
Western District of Louisiana Judge Terry A. Doughty previously denied the Biden administration’s request for an emergency order pausing his injunction on July 10. In an order Friday, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals issued an administrative stay on the injunction “until further orders” of the court.
Doughty
had previously issued a preliminary injunction barring the Biden
administration from communicating with social media companies to censor
protected speech on July 4.
The panel of judges who hear the case for arguments on
the merits will later consider the administration’s motion for a longer
stay, according to the order.

When Doughty denied the administration’s request for an emergency order Monday, he said
the injunction only bars the administration from doing something they
“no legal right to do—contacting social media companies for the purpose
of urging, encouraging, pressuring, or inducing in any manner, the
removal, deletion, suppression, or reduction of content containing
protected free speech posted on social-media platforms. It also contains
numerous exceptions.”
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey and Louisiana Attorney General Jeffrey Landry slammed
the administration’s attempt to stop the injunction as asking to
“continue violating the First Amendment” in a July 10 court filing.

year ago, I joined the states of Missouri and Louisiana and several
other co-plaintiffs to file a suit in federal court challenging what
journalist Michael Shellenberger has called the censorship-industrial complex.
While much of the press cooperated with the state’s censorship efforts
and has ignored our court battle, we expect that it will ultimately go
to the Supreme Court, setting up Missouri v. Biden to be the most important free speech case of our generation—and arguably, of the past 50 years.
Prior
government censorship cases typically involved a state actor
unconstitutionally meddling with one publisher, one author, one or two
books, a single article. But as we intend to prove in court, the federal
government has censored hundreds of thousands of Americans, violating
the law on tens of millions of occasions in the last several years. This
unprecedented breach was made possible by the wholly novel reach and
breadth of the new digital social media landscape.
My
co-plaintiffs, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya and Dr. Martin Kulldorff, and I
were censored for content related to COVID and public health policy that
the government disfavored. Documents we have reviewed on discovery
demonstrate that government censorship was far more wide-ranging than
previously known, from election integrity and the Hunter Biden laptop
story to gender ideology, abortion, monetary policy, the U.S. banking
system, the war in Ukraine, the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, and
more. There is hardly a topic of recent public discussion and debate
that the U.S. government has not targeted for censorship.
Jacob Seigel, Matt Taibbi, and other investigative reporters have begun to document
the anatomy of the censorship leviathan, a tightly interconnected
network of federal agencies and private entities receiving public
funding—where much of the censorship grunt work is outsourced. The
“industrial” in censorship-industrial complex should be understood
literally: censorship is now a highly developed industry, complete with career-training institutions in higher education (like Stanford’s Internet Observatory or the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public), full-time job opportunities in industry and government (from the Virality Project and the Election Integrity Partnership
to any number of federal agencies engaged in censorship), and insider
jargon and euphemisms (like disinformation, misinformation, and
“malinformation” which must be debunked and “prebunked”) to render the
distasteful work of censorship more palatable to industry insiders.
Our
lawyers were in court last week arguing for a preliminary injunction to
halt the activities of the censorship machine while our case is tried. I
will spare you a full account
of the government’s endless procedural wrangling, obfuscation, attempts
to hide, delays, and diversionary tactics in this case—futile efforts
to dodge even the most legally straightforward aspects of discovery,
such as our request to depose former Biden Press Secretary Jen Psaki. So
far, the government has been caught hiding discovery materials, which the judge chastised
them about before ruling against their motion to dismiss, reminding the
government that the limited discovery so far would widen once the case
went to trial.
The government’s lawyers were not able to block the deposition of Anthony Fauci,
however, who had to answer some pointed questions about his COVID
policies for the first time under the threat of the penalty of perjury.
Dr. Fauci seemed to suffer from a strange syndrome of “sudden-onset
amnesia” during his deposition, as I have describedelsewhere.
public | Social media companies, including TikTok, Snap, and Twitter, caused
people in France to riot and so the government should shut them down,
say French President Emmanuel Macron and the European Union’s top
censor, Thierry Breton.
Said Macron, “When things get out of hand, we may have to regulate them or cut [social networks] off.” The reason, Breton explained today,
is that “Social media didn’t do enough” to remove "content that is
hateful, that calls to revolt and to kill.” Warned Breton, "If they
don’t do it, they will be sanctioned immediately.”
The
comments made by Macron and Breton are shocking, and anybody who cares
about freedom of speech should denounce them as a clear and present
threat to the fundamental human right to freedom of expression as
enshrined in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, the French
Constitution, and the European Constitution.
It’s
true that there are legal protections for removing "content that is
hateful, that calls to revolt and to kill.” Such immediate incitement to
violence is even illegal in the United States, which has much stronger
free speech protections than France and Europe.
But neither
Macron, Breton nor their defenders have presented any evidence showing
that hate speech or incitement to violence rather than outrage over a
police killing, combined with a large and restless immigrant population
that France has failed to integrate and assimilate, caused the riots.
And their calls for greater censorship come at the same moment that the Macron government has passed a new law allowing police to spy on people by secretly taking control of their phones and laptop computers
and activating the microphone, camera, and GPS. The government says a
judge will have to approve all spying, but it is reasonable to worry
about abuses of power. In 2013, military contractor Edward Snowden
revealed mass US government spying without a warrant.
What’s
more, the attack on privacy and the demand for censorship is worldwide.
The British parliament is expected to pass legislation in the next few
weeks that will allow the government to spy on private and encrypted
text messages. The Irish Senate is expected to pass legislation in
October that will allow the police to enter homes without a warrant and
search phones and laptops for evidence of hate speech. And Australia is on the cusp of passing a new law
that would require social media companies to remove any speech that
causes “harm” to “health” or “the environment,” which would allow
government censorship of criticisms of its climate and energy policies.
Why is the attack on free speech and privacy happening in so many nations simultaneously? And what can be done about it?

Cognitive dissonance is a psychological state that describes the uncomfortable feeling between what one holds to be true and what one knows to be true. Similar to ambivalence, the term cognitive dissonance describes conflicting thoughts or beliefs (cognitions) that occur at the same time, or when engaged in behaviors that conflict with one's beliefs. In academic literature, the term refers to attempts to reduce the discomfort of conflicting thoughts, by performing actions that are opposite to one's beliefs.
In simple terms, it can be the filtering of information that conflicts with what one already believes, in an effort to ignore that information and reinforce one's beliefs. In detailed terms, it is the perception of incompatibility between two cognitions, where "cognition" is defined as any element of knowledge, including attitude, emotion, belief, or behavior. The theory of cognitive dissonance states that contradicting cognitions serve as a driving force that compels the mind to acquire or invent new thoughts or beliefs, or to modify existing beliefs, so as to reduce the amount of dissonance (conflict) between cognitions. Experiments have attempted to quantify this hypothetical drive. Some of these have examined how beliefs often change to match behavior when beliefs and behavior are in conflict.
Social Network Analysis [1] is an approach to studying organisations focusing on analysing the networks of relationships between people and/or groups as the most important aspect. Going back at least to the 1950's, it is characterised by adopting mathematical techniques especially from graph theory [2, 3]. It has applications in organisational psychology, sociology, and anthropology. An excellent overview of the field is given by Wasserman and Faust [1].
Social Network Analysis provides an avenue for analysing and comparing formal and informal information flows in an organisation, as well as comparing information flows with officially defined work processes. We are interested in applying Social Network Analysis to military organisations, and especially to military headquarters ranging from brigade to national strategic levels.
An important aspect of Social Network Analysis is the visualisation of communication and other relationships between people and/or groups, by means of diagrams. Visualisation of Social Networks has a long tradition, and an excellent historical survey is given by Freeman [4]. Visualisation of Social Networks is important because of the complexity of organisational structure, and the need for good visual representations of how an organisation functions.
A second aspect is the study of factors which influence relationships, for example the age, background, and training of the people involved. Studying the correlations between relationships is also important, since it offers insights into the reasons why relationships exists. These studies can be done using traditional statistical techniques such as correlation, analysis of variance, and factor analysis, but also require appropriate visualisation techniques.
The ultimate goal of Social Network Analysis is often to draw out implications of the relational data, in order to make recommendations to improve communication and workflow in an organisation. This is the major motivation for our Social Network Analysis programme. In previous work [5, 6, 7], we have applied Social Network Analysis to military organisations. In the course of this work, we have found conceptual distance to be the most useful construct in explaining relationships. This is partly because the human brain is skilled at thinking about and visually judging distances. In this paper we argue the benefits of using conceptual distance for analysing Social Networks, and demonstrate how to do so using a case study.
Within the next few years, Pentland predicts, reality mining will become more common, thanks in part to the proliferation and increasing sophistication of cell phones. Many handheld devices now have the processing power of low-end desktop computers, and they can also collect more varied data, thanks to devices such as GPS chips that track location. And researchers such as Pentland are getting better at making sense of all that information.
To create an accurate model of a person's social network, for example, Pentland's team combines a phone's call logs with information about its proximity to other people's devices, which is continuously collected by Bluetooth sensors. With the help of factor analysis, a statistical technique commonly used in the social sciences to explain correlations among multiple variables, the team identifies patterns in the data and translates them into maps of social relationships. Such maps could be used, for instance, to accurately categorize the people in your address book as friends, family members, acquaintances, or coworkers. In turn, this information could be used to automatically establish privacy settings--for instance, allowing only your family to view your schedule. With location data added in, the phone could predict when you would be near someone in your network. In a paper published last May, Pentland and his group showed that cell-phone data enabled them to accurately model the social networks of about 100 MIT students and professors. They could also precisely predict where subjects would meet with members of their networks on any given day of the week.
In 2004, UK researchers commissioned by Nice to develop guidelines for prescribing antidepressant drugs to children tried to obtain unpublished trials from the drug companies. They were refused. They then contacted the individual researchers who had worked on the trials. Only then did a picture emerge of increased risk of attempted suicide, and a lack of efficacy. Nice concluded by banning the drugs for under-18s with the exception of Prozac.
Yesterday's report suggesting that modern antidepressants offer no significant clinical benefit over placebo has been dismissed by the drug industry as "just one study" which should not be allowed to undermine the wealth of research showing that the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants are effective.
But that is to miss the point. The Hull University researchers have demonstrated how partial access to research can give a distorted view of a drug. The non-disclosure of data on the SSRIs has raised doubts about the trustworthiness of all research on antidepressants.
We should be relieved that the licensing authorities have an absolute right to see all trial data, positive and negative, before approving a drug. But, bizarrely, Nice, with the responsibility for deciding which drugs should be used by the NHS, only gets what the drug companies agree to give it. The Health Select Committee has called for action to remedy this omission. Ministers must respond.
They are among the biggest-selling drugs of all time, the "happiness pills" that supposedly lift the moods of those who suffer depression and are taken by millions of people in the UK every year.
But one of the largest studies of modern antidepressant drugs has found that they have no clinically significant effect. In other words, they don't work.
The finding will send shock waves through the medical profession and patients and raises serious questions about the regulation of the multinational pharmaceutical industry, which was accused yesterday of withholding data on the drugs.
In the study, researchers conducted a meta-analysis of all 47 clinical trials, published and unpublished, submitted to the Food and Drug Administration in the US, made in support of licensing applications for six of the best known antidepressant drugs, including Prozac, Seroxat – which is made by GlaxoSmithKline – and Efexor made by Wyeth. The results showed the drugs were effective only in a very small group of the most extremely depressed.
Two drugs were excluded from the study because of incomplete data. A third drug, chemical name nafazodone, has been withdrawn from the market because of side-effects.
Professor Irving Kirsch of the University of Hull, who led the study published in the online journal Public Library of Science (PLoS) Medicine , said the data submitted to the FDA would also have been submitted to the licensing authorities in Britain and Europe. It showed the drugs produced a "very small" improvement compared with placebo of two points on the 51-point Hamilton depression scale.
That was sufficient to grant the drugs a licence but did not meet the minimum three-point difference required by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (Nice) to establish "clinical" significance. Full-monty available here - in tomorrow's UK Independent.

Contrary to our activity, the discovery and production of more interesting or useful machines is not the penultimate goal of our species. Whatever it was we came to be and experience together definitely has more to do with animals than it does machines — in every possible way. It probably has a lot more to do with trees than machines, too. It defintely has to do with each other.
There are certainly hidden potentials in our human theory and technology we have not yet guessed the shapes or opportunities of — but there are also potentials in other domains we commonly ignore that far outweigh the power of those we are generally habituated to pursue, defend, value and emulate. This ‘library’ of opportunities is vast beyond our wildest imaginings, however our access is blocked by our insistance on mechanical approaches and technological ‘advancement’. The very ways of knowing we look to for enlightenment are consuming us (and our world) while systematically pretending to a heroism their enactions consistently deliver the opposite of.
I believe that the most incredible discovery our species will make will grant us new and complexly evolving experiences of personal, social and cultural liberty. It will be something we do together, for and with each other — all the time — a very general thing. Having found such a new way of experiencing ourselves and our world we will remember our earlier selves as ‘having nearly perished in the attempt to conserve heartful intentions in heartless vehicles and transports of relation’.
That liberty looks like unity. Not an formalized unity, but one that grows in waves of explosive abundance and regeneration — beyond all definition — any time it is experienced and elaborated by any interaction at all. It looks like impossible movement, that grows more impossible and amazing with each motion.
In assembly and form — this movement would be much more akin to an explosively positive game — than a religion, theory, law, philosophy, government, or formal way of knowing.
Formal vehicles resist change and are far too interested in their own reproduction and conservation to deserve our undivided attention. Informal vehicles are made to dissolve themselves, in order to provide access to a transport.
What sort of ‘thing’ could relate to knowledge the way that E=mc2 has come to relate to physics? A discovery of this magnitude would awaken the sleeping potential for the opposite of an atomic bomb: a sort of star exploding in the domain of human sentience, instead of a way of unfolding matter to create horror. We might expect to have direct experience, for the first time in modern history, of a way of being together that would encourage and empower us to share, grow and receive real understanding and access to our potentials — instead of predatory copies of these things masquerading as heroes, while copying themselves endlessly into every possible terrain.
I realize that I repeat myself. In part because I am at pains to solidly convey that I am not referring to a theory, religion or dogma — I am speaking of a transport — an ‘ever-growing set of ways’, to which we will at last have clear and common access, and the powers of mutual uplift, rescue and celebration that will arise in the wake of such a ‘disc over y’.
Am I speculating? No. I speak as though I am for the sake of achieving agreement to explore. What I am speaking about is accessible now, and it has the power to end war, and to allow us to transcend some broken toys that have kept us trapped in games of mutual annihilation, in general.
Something got broken in our species, a long time ago. And we can repair this something, together, now.
A long time ago an expanding ramp of barriers got set up between us and our inherent potentials with knowledge and relation. The time has arrived when we can surpass those barriers together, rapidly, and even turn some of them to the advantage not only of our peoples, but of the delicate nursery in and with which we proceed toward our hidden purposes, potentials, and powers.
It is clearly evident that some ‘ways of knowing’ actively abhor the biosphere, and all forms or assemblies of organism in general. Perhaps more surprising is that a vast portion of the ways of knowing we commonly credential actively abhor human beings, and hate or attack all human children — merely by the nature of their character and function in the imaginal and real worlds. Why would we select or empower such modes, when an infinite garden of choices are immediately at hand?

We are cognitive animals, in a hypercognitive environment. Our human activisms will fail, unless they can address the sources of our ancient confusions and failures to discover the clearly present ways and means of mutual prosperity inherent in the problems our broken access magnifies into our experience and history.
Perhaps we might thus agree that we desire an activism so general, that it’s different from anything we’ve ever considered or been exposed to. Possibly even something that doesn’t have or require a name. A game of activism so like what we are and become that rather than fashioning us into the likeness of some model it proposes — it empowers us to choose and celebrate together that which we actually are and may become.

All of human activism has arisen primarily in opposition to broken ways of knowing — employed and empowered by people who agree to believe ideas. But these ideas are ‘cached tokens’ of the experience of distant others. If circumstance is even moderately different according to the moment and the place — this ‘belief’ is too often far more logically false than what literalists might refer to as ‘the false position of faith’.
We’re about to assemble a form of activism with the potential to overwhelm the source of human atrocity — because rather than wasting time in opposing anything — it empowers us to become more than models of some idea. I am also certain we will experience this together, learning in ways beyond the possibilities of our wildest and most hopeful imaginings. When we have unity, access to our birthrights, and the protection of our unique human, personal and cultural diversity we accrue the power to openly oppose atrocity without reference to or memory of combat. We can now explore and become something together that there is no modern model even vaguely alike with — an experience of unity so liberating that its momentum gains speed and effect at unopposable velocities.
Most of our confusion and suffering at the hands of our foibles is the result of an accident. It’s the kind of an accident we’ve never heard a decent story about — and hearing a few radically altars our potential to notice and interact together with novel domains of co-operative play. Since no one had any way to speak of this accident, or the time before it, the best thing we have are badly mistranslated analogs. When we get to play with toys of knowing that are more like what we are and represent, the way our minds arrange and experience knowledge changes dramatically.
My personal sense is this comprises an entirely unexplored universe of human potential, primarily in the domain of an incredible new way of learning — and of human unity in mutual exploration — that will lead us to terrains of knowledge so vast an unexpected that they could entirely re-write most of what we consider to be fact within the next 5 years. Science, religion, and philosophies — are about to face an insurmountable opponent to their primacy and credentialing-power: pure organismal sentience, in liberated coemergence.
And this is what ‘Life’ is actually about. All of organismal reality is ‘attempting to recapitulate something’ in the same way our own genesis and experience as an embryo was recapitulating all of the terrestrial genesis of life. Something is being assembled by and with(in) physical organismal expression and activity...that is not physical at all in the way we would match with this idea. It is hyperconnective, self-elaborative, and it plays a unityGame that binds all participants ever more closely into something we have no metaphor of: Our world is a distributed organism...
And all of this has a lot to do with how we know, what we know, and what we can do with and about these gardens...in a radically new way: a way that makes new ways, instead of trying to preserve itself and children of itself at all costs.

We are imprisoned within a system of logic, language, and values. Normalcy in this system is defined as the uncritical acceptance of this condition. To the extent that people think about the system at all, they think of it as a shared consensus, as a consensus reality. This consensus reality is the means by which we communicate and agree upon the way things are, and the way they must be. Because of normalized tacit agreement and complicity in its maintenance, consensus reality is the ultimate secret society. It is so secret that the overwhelming majority of its members are unaware of its existence.
So far as it is a functioning model, such a consensus is valid. Insofar as it is not a functioning model, and is, as in the present case, on the verge of breakdown, then such a consensus is, by definition, invalid. It therefore becomes the right and responsibility of every thinking member of consensus reality to cancel his membership, and to option a new, higher, or broader concept of “reality”.
Ostracization having been the normative Black experience of American consensus reality, we have long been free of many of its systemic constraints, free enough to at least question and eschew complicity in its continuing maintenance. However, questioning and criticism is insufficient to the cause of implementing and sustaining an alternative. What and where are the tools by which one might meaningfully engage the challenge of engineering an alternative cognitive and cultural reality?
The artificial construction of reality was to play a key role in the new form of global intelligence which would soon emerge among human beings. If the group brain's "psyche" were a beach with shifting dunes and hollows, individual perception would be that beach's grains of sand. However this image has a hidden snag - pure individual perception does not exist.
Being here is a kind of spiritual surrender. We see only what the others see, the thousands who were here in the past, those who will come in the future. We've agreed to be part of a collective perception. Don DeLillo
A central rule of large-scale organization goes like this: the greater the spryness of a massive enterprise, the more internal communication it takes to support the teamwork of the parts. For example, in all but the simplest plants and animals only 5% of DNA is dedicated to DNA's "real job," manufacturing proteins. The remaining 95% is preoccupied with organization and administration, supervising the maintenance of bodily procedures, or even merely interpreting the corporate rule book "printed" in a string of genes.
In an effective learning machine, the connections between internal elements far outnumber windows to the outside world. Take the cerebral cortex, roughly 80% of whose nerves connect with each other, not with sensory input from the eyes or ears. No wonder in human society individuals spend most of their time communicating with each other, not exploring beasts and plants which could make an untraditional dish. This cabling for "bureaucratic maintenance" has a far greater impact on what we "see" and "hear" than most psychological researchers suspect. For it puts us in the hands of a conformity enforcer whose power and subtlety are almost beyond belief.
In our previous episode we mentioned that the brain's emotional center - the limbic system - decides which swatches of experience to "notice" and store in memory. Memory is the core of what we call reality. Think about it for a second. What do you actually hear and see right now? This article. The walls and furnishings of the room in which you sit. Perhaps some music or some background noise. Yet you know sure as those walls. You are certain that your home, if you are away from it, is still there. You can sense each room, remember where most of your things are placed. You know the building where you work - its colors, layout, and the feel of it. Then there are the companions who enrich your life - family, the folks at the office, neighbors, friends, and even people you are fond of whom you haven't talked to in a year or more - few of whom, if any, are in the room with you. You also know we sit on a planet called the earth, circling an incandescent ball of sun, buried in one of many galaxies. At this instant, reading by yourself, where do these realities reside? Inside your mind. Memory in a very real sense is reality. What the limbic system decides to "see" and store away becomes an interior universe pretending to stretch so far outside that it can brush the edges of infinity.

Given that our powerful brains have so many disadvantages and not much payback in terms of survival, at least in the early stages before technology, why was increasing brain power been selected for, generation by generation, until the evolution of the human mind?
The primary selection pressure is survival but the second is reproductive success: Darwin pointed this out in the Origin of Species. Complex animals reproduce sexually so success involves mating. Vertebrates have complex signalling systems and behavior to persuade another individual to choose them as a suitable partner. This can result in the evolution of anatomical features that are neutral or even disadvantageous to survival. For example, the growth of antlers in deer have a high metabolic cost, offer little survival advantage, but are essential for a male deer to intimidate competitors to win the hooves of fair deer maidens.
The more complicated an organism's reproductive system the more likely the sexes of a species are to have different reproductive strategies, and the mammalian system is very complicated. The best explanation of human intelligence is that it is the result of sexual selection by women. Men tend to be attracted to women who are fit, healthy, young and not yet pregnant (slim waist).
These characteristics are not unimportant to women (well, except the last) but women get stuck with the baby so, given that people are social animals, women are attracted to high status men who will be able to provide support for them and their children. In a social animal, high status revolves around sophisticated interaction, for which intelligence is an advantage because of the need to manipulate, and enjoy good relations with, other members of society.
Even our verbal facility is probably the result of female sexual selection. In British English, boys attempt to "chat up" girls at parties. If women kept selecting for intelligence in men then this would overcome any counter-survival effect of "wasting" resources on high energy brains.
But note that the exact choice of a sexual selection feature is a haphazard process. Women might have selected on developing an oversized red nose, the ability to hop around in a circle with effortless grace, or antlers. Female birds often select on feather coloration patterns and there is evidence that therapod dinosaurs had similar behavior. Bipedal therapods were mostly predators, like wolves or tigers, whereas we are social omnivores and that is probably the key difference.
The take home message is that intelligence is a rather unlikely end result that depends on a conjunction of haphazard ecological and evolutionary features.
Maybe an intelligent species of social therapod dinosaur might still have evolved if the Cretaceous Great extinction had not happened — but major catastrophes from local events up to mass extinctions are a regular feature of life on Earth.
Species survival over time, particularly for a large organism, is to a large extent a matter of sheer luck. We almost didn't make it. About seventy-five-thousand years ago there was a catastrophe, the Toba super-volcanic eruption. The Toba Event seems to have taken human beings to the very brink of extinction. Genetic evidence suggests that we were reduced to between one and ten thousand breeding pairs. All modern humans are genetically closely related, which is why inbreeding is so very dangerous for us.
Toba was a volcanic pinprick compared to the Deccan Traps associated with the Cretaceous great extinction, or the Siberian Traps with the larger Permian extinctions, but it was enough to nearly do for a large animal geographically restricted to Africa. Toba may even have given the kick needed to evolve the human mind and civilization, but our survival was touch and go.
And here, I think, is the explanation for the Fermi Paradox. There does not need to be anything special about Earth or H. sapiens. Applying the Principle of Mediocrity, the universe probably teems with life, quite complex life. But intelligent life is simply unlikely because the evolutionary dice are rigged against it. It is very unlikely that a large complex animal, with the right sexual selection system, will survive long enough for circumstances to kick start the path to a technological civilization.
You don't need a special, unique planet to evolve an intelligent organism. You just need a lot of life on a lot of planets and one or two will win the lottery no matter how unlikely the probability. It's just a matter of random luck. There is nothing special about someone who wins the national lottery.
I suspect it is the "probability of evolving intelligent life" that is the key variable that governs the Drake Equation: the probability must be close to zero. Should we survive long enough to break free of our solar system cradle, the last variable, I suspect we will find life in abundance but will probably never ever meet intellectual peers.

Dick (hereafter known as PKD) is best known through films like Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly, which were all based on his writings. Classic movies like The Matrix and Vanilla Sky also owe a great debt to PKD's work. What is not so well known is that PKD was a bit of a latter-day mystic, a man who spent the last decade or so of his life struggling to come to terms with a series of visionary experiences (not related to psychedelics) that befell him in the early 1970s. In these experiences, PKD felt as if some vast cosmic intelligence was communicating with him, as if a deity was slipping him secret information. Such was the impact of these theophanies that he chose to incorporate their thematic content into a number of novels as well as an eight-thousand-page exegesis. To the consternation of his peers, PKD began to be not a little obsessed with ideas of "divine invasion" and the like, his last books testifying to his escalating interest in theology and theistic philosophy (interestingly, his last novel, The Transmigration of Timothy Archer, partly concerns the search for a sacred mushroom).
Since his death it has been speculated that PKD suffered from what is known as temporal lobe epilepsy -- a brain disorder that can lead to hallucinatory experiences -- and that this explains his mystical encounters. However, leaving aside the contentiousness of this claim, it does not deal with the burning issue of immediate mystical experience. To label an experience in order to explain it away is to avoid the very real nature of the mystical experience, however it should arise. In fact, as Huxley noted in The Doors of Perception, we should not be surprised if there is always unusual neuronal activity concurrent with a mystical experience, for, as we have seen, modified neuronal firing patterns are related to expanded forms of consciousness. Altered forms of awareness demand altered brain processes, and such a change in brain state can be achieved in many different ways, whether through psilocybin mushrooms, endogenous DMT, yoga, meditation, fasting, or spontaneous epileptic disturbances. Mystical experience is therefore not to be conveniently disposed of with a diagnostic label.
Even before his visionary experiences, PKD had long fought to discover the true nature of reality. It was his pet fascination. In a talk he delivered in the late 1970s, he admitted that for all the years he had thought about the question "what is reality?" he had gotten no further than concluding that reality was that which remained even if you stopped believing in it. Admittedly a thin definition, it is nonetheless indicative that the true nature of reality is not so easily pinned down.
PKD juggled with countless explanations for his mystical experiences. Some involved a Judeo-Christian God, others involved the Logos outlined in some of the Gnostic gospels (these are the "alternative" gospels dug up at Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in 1945), while others even opted for an advanced extraterrestrial intelligence. Whatever the case, PKD was certain that he had been "contacted" by some form of advanced transcendental intelligence-cum-Other.
One of his more enduring theories concerned VALIS, which is an acronym for "vast active living intelligence system," a notion that accords well with our intelligent Other. In the semiautobiographical novel of the same name, VALIS is a hidden entity of immense power and sentience that is in the process of infiltrating our reality by establishing communication with certain individuals. These disclosures are experienced as theophany. For our purposes, the key point is that VALIS is essentially outside of our dimension, but able to penetrate our world. The question arises as to the feasibility that a superior intelligence exists in another dimension with the capacity to move across into ours. This is one of our fanciful options concerning the Other.

These questions - which have long puzzled psychologists, philosophers, and neurobiologists - were recently addressed in a study by Hebrew University of Jerusalem researchers and published by the journal Psychological Science.
The study was headed by Prof. Leon Deouell from the Hebrew University's Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences (ELSC) and Department of Psychology and Prof. Dominique Lamy from the Department of Psychology at Tel Aviv University, and conducted by research student Liad Mudirk of Tel Aviv University with collaboration of research student Assaf Breska from the Hebrew University.
We are not consciously aware of most of the input that hits upon our sensory systems. Yet subjectively, conscious awareness dominates our mental activity. "One of the dominant theories in cognitive sciences and psychology posits that parts of the information perceived without awareness may be processed to a certain extent," says Prof. Deouell. "Yet to bind the different parts of a complex input into something meaningful and coherent requires conscious awareness.
To test this theory, the research team ran a study in which they presented participants with pictures of natural scenes including some human action, like a picture of basketball players jumping to reach a ball.
In other tests, the same scenes were presented -- except that the central object was replaced by another, unlikely object. For example, the basketball was replaced by a watermelon.
The participants viewed the pictures through a mirror stereoscope, a simple device that allowed the research team to present the pictures to only one eye. At the same time, the other eye viewed rapidly flickering patterns of colors which drew the subjects' attention, so that the participants were not aware for many seconds that anything was presented to their other eye. This allowed the researchers to measure how long it takes normal and unusual scenes to "win the competition" against the flickering pattern and break into awareness.
"We found that participants became aware of the unusual scenes earlier than to the usual scenes," commented Deouell. "The conclusion was that even before the participants were aware of the existence of the picture, the semantic relationships between parts of the scene were interpreted."
The study shows that, counter to previous theories, integration is not the prerogative of conscious awareness but is achieved even without awareness. When and why then do we need conscious awareness?
The findings of this research suggest that when the results of the integration between parts of the input are incompatible with expectations or prior knowledge, awareness is required in order to account for the conundrum. Thus, the study expands the realm of unaware processes, yet shows that conscious awareness is not a meaningful luxury - it allows us to deal with novel and unexpected situations.

These are called neuronal resonance patterns, and patterns of patterns: metapatterns. Thus, pattern is the "infrastructure" of neuronal processing happening in our brains, below, and a few miliseconds before our working consciousness experiences the "phainomena" and "noumena", of our discernible impressions and thoughts. This spatio-temporal neuronal infrastructure is then re-interpreted in a Neo-Pythagorean way, as the "inner music of the brain", which supports a new validation for the old Pythagorean world views.

"a southern destination". He surrenders his vessel, along with another
U-boat on the 17th of August 1945 at Mar Del Plato, Argentina. This
period is more than enough time to reach New Swabia and then surrender
in Argentina after completing the "mission".

1957- Geophysical Year multi-nation scientific research in Antarctica.

- the Antarctic Treaty is signed, and comes into effect in 1961. The
discovery of other world anomalies in Antarctica will remain top secret,
only a few representatives of each of the 55 signatory nations will be
informed.
2015- Vladimir Putin
expresses a need to "expand" scientific research in Antarctica, sending
scientific vessels with a full military escort.
2016
- John Kerry visits the top secret base in Antarctica on the day of the
2016 U.S. Presidential election, expecting a Hillary Clinton win.
Hillary has a well-known UFO interest, as does John Podesta. Was Kerry
sent there to "get the ball rolling" on Disclosure immediately?
2017
- After a thousand years of animosity, beginning in 1054 A.D., the
Roman Catholic Church and the Russian Orthodox Church sign a communion
agreement in Cuba. Pope Francis and Patriarch Kiril are present, and
Kiril makes an unplanned detour on the way home to the Bellinghausen
Station in Antarctica, which is controlled by Russia. As the Vatican no
longer had access to the Magenta craft since its recovery in 1944, the
Pope informs the Patriarch about the "Others" and tells him to "see it
for himself" in Antarctica when Kiril expresses disbelief in what Pope
Francis tells him.
2018 - The
Strava heat map leak. Military personnel from a variety of nations
accidentally reveal the locations of secret military bases when the data
from their exercise regimes and patterns of life are geolocated and
published by Strava, the manufactures of the exercise watch. Included in
the global map is an extraordinary amount of activity in Antarctica,
exposing a massive circular path of a kilometer or so in diameter. There
is no explanation forthcoming as to why there is such activity on the
frozen continent.
Whilst it is not
normally a good idea to bring religion or politics into the discussion
of NHI, in this instance I think it is warranted. The video below gives a
very good explanation of the strange events leading up to the religious
reconciliation for background.

origin of this accident would be a sandstorm that occurred instantly
over the city of Mecca. Fans of conspiracy theories say Saudi Arabia has given Russia an ancient apocalyptic weapon discovered under the great mosque in Mecca, according to Daily Star
Through the darkest corners of the internet, there was a rumor that under the Masjid al-Haram mosque, the holiest place of Islam, a legendary weapon called the “Ark of Gabriel” was discovered.
According to the legend, the archangel Gabriel, who told the Virgin
Mary that she would give birth to Jesus, and would have dictated the
Qur’an to Prophet Mohammed – would also entrust to the founder of
Islamic religion a box or an ark with an “enormous power”.
Mohammed was told to bury the ark in an altar, to a place of prayer, to be dug up only when the end of the world is near.
On
September 11, 2015, in an attempt to move that mysterious weapon, it
instantly ejected a huge plasma emission that was so powerful that it
affected the crane that crashed across people, causing 107 victims.
A
second attempt to move the mysterious weapon took place on September
24, 2015, but this time, that huge plasma emission caused thousands of
deaths in Mina, very close to Mecca. The authorities blamed the “panic
of the crowd” and hid the truth from public opinion.
The
authorities did not give an official statement. A photo that was caught
before the catastrophe raises many questions. It's a flash that was
caught a few minutes before the tragedy was produced.
Immediately after the second catastrophe, His Holiness, Patriarch Kiril of Moscow, was contacted by the Saudis.
Why? Because the Russian Orthodox Church holds an old Islamic manuscript, which was rescued by the Roman Catholic crusaders in 1204 when they robbed the Hagia Sophia Cathedral in Constantinople (today Istanbul, Turkey).
This manuscript, titled “Gabriel’s Instructions to Muhammad”, presents the history of the instructions given to Mohammed by the angel Gabriel in a cave called Hira, located on Mount Jabal un-Nour, near Mecca.
The angel entrusted to Muhammad a “box/ark” with a “tremendous power,” belonging to God and only to God.
This “box” should not be used at all, but buried in an altar, “in the place of worship of angels before the creation of man,” until Qiyamah, that is, until “the Resurrection Day.”
Gabriel’s Ark to Russians?
What happened next to this mysterious “box” / “weapon” buried in Mecca?
There is information that “the weapon of the Angel Gabriel” might now be in the hands of the Russians, a Russian military ship, Admiral Vladimiski, leaving in November 2015 the Jeddah Saudi Port, carrying on board the mysterious object, called “Gabriel’s Ark”.
And the Russians took this weapon to Antarctica. Why there? I have no
idea, but not for nothing, the Nazis had secret bases in Antarctica.
There is something mysterious there …
Russia
has provided specialists and a ship to transport the object. It is also
said that to protect the ship, the Russians used nuclear weapons that
produced the catastrophe.
On September 25, Patriarch Cyril, the head of the Russian church, had a meeting with representatives of the Saudi authorities.
It is said that the object discovered is of an extraordinary importance to the Russian church.
This information came to the press after a Kremlin report, which unofficially came to the hands of some media representatives.
The report explains that the 15 scientists who participated in the
removal of the precious object from the underground, at the time of its
extraction, produced a huge explosion.
A plasma
emission caused an explosion in one of the tunnels. In ancient religious
texts, it is said that God forbade the use of this mysterious,
destructive object that Mohammed would have wanted to use.
This object was hidden under the largest mosque in Saudi Arabia.
Putin was the first head of state to be notified by the Saudi
authorities of the mysterious object discovered. He sent the famous
military ship, Vladimirski, to carry the mysterious object.
A
few days after this event, Putin ordered the bombing of Syria. It is
also said that after this discovery there was a very close relationship
between Russia and Saudi Arabia.
Interestingly, on
February 12, 2016, a historic meeting, the first in over 1,000 years,
took place in Cuba between Pope Francis, the leader of the Roman
Catholic Church and Patriarch Kirill of Russia, the head of the Russian
Orthodox Church.
Why? The exact nature of the
conversation is not known, but there is information “scattered” on the
Internet that Pope Francis would have given Patriarch Kirill another
secret Bible manuscript, owned by the Vatican Library, which speaks of
the same “Gabriel’s Ark” and about which is said to have been written
even by the Bible “Watchmen” (angels).
Leaders of the
greatest Christian denominations, Pope Francis and Patriarch of the
Russian Orthodox Church, Kirill, met for the first time in nearly a
thousand years.
After this meeting of Kirill with Pope Francis, in
6 days, on February 18, 2016, the patriarch of Russia goes directly to
Antarctica (read the news on The Telegraph)!
Surprise
surprise! What does Patriarch Kirill do in Antarctica? Beyond the
official lying statements, he seems to have gone there because the
Russian Navy Vladimir, carrying on board “Gabriel’s ark,” brought in
Antarctica this mysterious ancient object.
With the
help of the Pope’s manuscript, Kirill held a job (an “ancient ritual”)
for Gabriel’s Ark at the Trinity Church of King George (Antarctica), a
small Russian Orthodox church.
Interestingly, there are
rumors that President Obama, during his visit to Argentina (March
26-27, 2016), made a secret visit to Antarctica, in the unknown Russian
location where Gabriel’s ark is housed.
Bizarrely, part of the data is real. The Amiral Vladimisky vessel
called the Jeddah port at the beginning of that month on a
“military-religious” mission.
The reason for the appeal was not officially explained, the Russian press describing it as a mysterious business visit.
Navy spokesperson said:
“THE
CREW HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO REST. THE WATER AND FOOD SUPPLIES WERE
REFRESHED. “BUT STRANGELY, THE CARGO INCLUDED RUSSIAN-MADE CAPSULES THAT
WERE TO BE PLACED IN” MILITARY GLORY “AREAS AND IN THE SEASIDE PLACES
OF RUSSIAN SAILORS.
Sorcha Faal, whose unfounded
allegations about Gabriel’s Ark spread very quickly on the Internet,
offer no reason beyond the fact that Islam and the Russian Orthodox
Church are hostile to the Catholic Church for which Saudi Arabia would
offer Russia this weapon.
Equally well, Sorcha Faal
fails to explain why Russia would carry the gun to the Antarctic, but
only provides some links to conspiracy theories about the existence of a
“Nazi Nazi UFO base” at the South Pole.
Faal is
considered to be a pseudonym of David Booth who owns the What Does It
Mean site, the site that first appeared the information.
It
is very unlikely that Booth, whose beliefs are the same, and that
according to which a planet named Nibiru will strike the Earth until
March 2016, have access to the Russian army’s secret reports.
NC | So, who in the EU will get to define what actually constitutes mis- or disinformation?
Surely it will be the job of an independent regulator or a judicial
authority with at least clear procedural parameters and no or few
conflicts of interest. At least that is what one would hope.
But no.
The ultimate decider of what constitutes mis- or dis-information,
possibly not just in the EU but across multiple jurisdictions around the
world (more on that later), will be the European Commission. That’s
right, the EU’s power-hungry, conflict-riddled, Von der Leyen-led
executive branch. The same institution that is in the process of
dynamiting the EU’s economic future through its endless backfiring
sanctions on Russia and which is mired in Pfizergate, one of the biggest
corruption scandals of its 64-year existence. Now the Commission wants
to take mass censorship to levels not seen in Europe since at least the
dying days of the Cold War.
In this task the Commission will have, in its own words, “enforcement
powers similar to those it has under anti-trust proceedings,” adding
that “an EU-wide cooperation mechanism will be established between
national regulators and the Commission.”
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) broadly supports
many aspects of the DSA, including the protections it provides on user
rights to privacy by prohibiting platforms from undertaking targeted
advertising based on sensitive user information, such as sexual
orientation or ethnicity. “More broadly, the DSA increases the
transparency about the ads users see on their feeds as platforms must
place a clear label on every ad, with information about the buyer of the
ad and other details.” It also “reins in the powers of Big Tech” by
forcing them to “comply with far-reaching obligations and responsibly
tackle systemic risks and abuse on their platform.”
But even the EFF warns that the new law “provides a fast-track
procedure for law enforcement authorities to take on the role of
‘trusted flaggers’ and uncover data about anonymous speakers and remove
allegedly illegal content – which platforms become obligated to remove
quickly.” The EFF also raises concerns about the dangers posed by the
Commission’s starring role in all of this:
Issues with government involvement in content moderation
are pervasive and whilst trusted flaggers are not new, the DSA’s system
could have a significant negative impact on the rights of users, in
particular that of privacy and free speech.
And free speech and a free press are the foundation stones of any genuine liberal democracy, as notes the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU):
The First Amendment protects our freedom to speak,
assemble, and associate with others. These rights are essential to our
democratic system of governance. The Supreme Court has written that
freedom of expression is “the matrix, the indispensable condition of
nearly every other form of freedom.” Without it, other fundamental
rights, like the right to vote, would cease to exist. Since its
founding, the ACLU has advocated for broad protection of our First
Amendment rights in times of war and peace, to ensure that the
marketplace of ideas remains vigorous and unrestricted.
A Transatlantic “Wish List”
The DSA and the Biden Administration’s proposed RESTRICT Act (which Yves dissected back in April) were among the topics discussed during Russell Brand’s recent interview of Matt Taibbi. Both bills, said
Taibbi, are essentially a “wish list that has been passed around” by
the transatlantic elite “for some time,” including at a 2021 gathering
at the Aspen Institute:
The governments want absolute, full and complete access
to all data that these platforms provide. And then they want a couple of
other things that are really important. They want to have the authority
to come in and moderate or at least be part of the process of
moderation. And they also want people who are called trusted “flaggers” —
that’s how they’re described in the European law — to have access to
these platforms as well. What they mean by that are these outside
quasi-governmental agencies who tell these platforms what they can and
cannot print about things like vaccine safety.
In other words, the legal environment for free speech is set to
become even more hostile in Europe. And possibly not just Europe. As
Norman Lewis writes for the British online news website Spiked,
the DSA will not only force the regulation of content on the Internet,
but could also become a global standard, not just a European one:
